For over 6 months we have been chatting on IM and emailing each other, and I feel sure that he is a good person. I was planning to meet him at his hotel for a chat when he had a 24 layover at airport near my home town. However, my male friend who goes to school and back with me each day says that as a high school age girl I am too optimistic, and that I would be foolish to meet this person at his hotel. He said if I will go there, I am not his friend. Do you think it would be ok for me to meet my internet friend, or do you think that it would be too dangerous. I need advice, as I can not decide what to do.

  • Regardless of your age, I think it's very foolish to be meeting someone at their hotel. I think if you meet someone it should always be in a public crowded place. And as a high school aged girl, I would say you should be extremely cautious about such things. I think it's fine to make friends with people over the internet. I have to say it's very shady cause he's pressuring you to meet him at his hotel. I mean you don't actually have to meet him to be friends. In fact I'd think this is someone who probably should be reported to the police.

So, basically. Don't be foolish about meeting him. I would say don't meet him at all.

I'd say meet some place public for coffee or lunch, make sure at least two other people know when and where you're going, and have a set time to call them (i.e., one to two hours after your initial meet-up time) and again once the encounter is over. This is a matter of your personal safety and anyone who would object to you being cautious is not someone you should be meeting in person, let alone in a hotel room.
